History The Discovery Center was founded in 1995 by the First
Baptist Church of Ocean Beach, with the start of the Counseling Center,
offering individual and family counseling services to the community.
The vision quickly grew to include all age groups with a variety of
different needs and a strong focus was placed on the youth of our
community. The first Surf Report (a survey determining community
needs) was taken in 1997 and the OB1 Skate Park was built as a direct
result of the overwhelming response to provide youth a safe and fun
place to skate. Since then, many other programs have been established,
including the CyberLab Computer Center, Art Classes, Money Management
Workshops, Music Lessons, and a Health and Fitness program. The
Discovery Center was established as a separate, charitable, 501(c)3
nonprofit organization in 2000 and continues to maintain its mission
and vision to meet the needs of the community. The center is governed
by a Board of Directors, and the outreach programs are staffed by
dedicated volunteers who make it possible to reach out to the needs of
the community. The Discovery Center relies on aid from
individuals, businesses and foundations to keep its programs operating
while striving to create services that are designed to be
self-supporting. The Discovery Center continues to seek out the needs
of the community and find ways to meet those needs, keeping its
programs and its volunteer staff on the cutting edge of service.
